In Egypt, it seems that
graffiti has appeared since
the times of ancient Egypt.
It was utilized as a form of
worship. An example of
this is the figure of the god-
dess Ma’at, who can be
identified by the feather on
her head. Next to the god-
dess, a figure kneels with
hands raised in adoration
and praise. Ma’at was an
ancient Egyptian goddess
of justice, truth, and law.
This graffiti art, known as
street art, and used as a
tool of self-expression, has
been totally changed since
the time of the Egyptian
revolution. It started to be
an expressive tool used by

youth to protest. We can
find all the artwork made
during the revolution in the
book “walls of Freedom”.
During the Egyptian revolu-
tion, graffiti became a way
of communication to ex-
press the political view and
challenge the restrictions
done by the government
on the media. Those street
artists were working in the
shade for a long time, till
the revolution that had put
a spot on them.
